Helfpul for First Timers |
Overall, I found this book helpful for a first-time teacher. I recently returned to reaching after a 10 year career in the Arts, and was overhelmed by how things had changed. This book does a pretty good job of laying out what you need to do and know to make it as a first year teacher.
It won't necessarily make you a better teacher (only practice can do that), but it can make an impact in your life by letting you realize that a lot of others have been through this before. |

| This teacher seems to have spent time in a classroom, maybe too much time. She talks to her readers like we're the ones in elementary school. There are some good ideas here, and it's better than nothing, but this book is full of observations like "create a syllabus" and "fighting is frowned upon" that I don't need to pay $30.00 to read. |

| This book has been helpful for the new teachers I mentor, and for *me*. It's overflowing with practical and immediately useable ideas and activities. One of my mentees didn't want to give it back to me--I had to buy another for my own use. :) These are not necessarily novel ideas, but the sections are comprehensive. As an experienced and successful teacher, I found this book ideal for trying out some new strategies and especially for remembering others that I hadn't tried for a while. New teachers I worked with found strategies they were comfortable with--and the assurance that need to use different strategies with different students is normal for ALL teachers. |
